ANSI/SIA A92 – Understanding the Requirements for Aerial Lift Inspections

Regular aerial lift inspections are crucial to ensure that your lifts are working correctly and keeping employees safe. Although daily aerial lift inspections can help operators spot minor problems, yearly inspections are required for a more comprehensive view – and to stay compliant with ANSI/SIA A92 standards.

Here’s a quick overview of the ANSI/SIA A92 inspection requirements and best practices for Aerial Working Platforms:

• Frequent Inspections: According to ANSI/SIA Standards A92.5 and A92.6 section 6.6(2), aerial lift inspections must be conducted at least every three months or every 150 hours – whichever comes first. Additionally, an aerial lift equipment mechanic should inspect the equipment.
• Annual Inspections: There are also ANSI aerial lift annual inspection requirements. A92.5 section 6.7 and A92.6 section of the ANSI/SIA Standards require aerial lift annual inspections to be conducted within 13 months of the most recent assessment. A qualified aerial lift equipment mechanic must perform the inspection in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines. Additionally, if any aerial lift problems are identified during the inspection, the owner must take the equipment out of service until repairs are made.
• Preventative Measures: Although your aerial lift annual inspection is a requirement – most organizations can agree that inspecting an aerial lift once every 13 months isn’t enough. During this time, minor issues can turn into big problems – putting the safety of your employees at risk and potentially costing your company thousands in repairs.
